Crossed that off the bucket list!

Camelback Mountain is one of the most popular attractions in Phoenix. It gets its name from two rock formations that resemble the head and back of a kneeling camel. It is rated extremely difficult as hikers are challenged with exposed rock, strenuous climbs and sections where there is hand-over-hand climbing. It is a tough hike but the 360-degree view at the summit makes it worth it and this time of year there was even a Christmas tree at the top! We tackled this on December 18th. It is definitely not for the faint of heart and most on the trail were less than 1/2 our ages!! But we were well prepared thanks in part to healthy eating, lots of gym time and daily cardio and we conquered Camelback Mountain. We can help you reach your active goals too!!

Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial Trail

About an hour from Phoenix is the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park which was dedicated in 2016 as a place to remember the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshot Firefighters who died on June 30, 2013, while fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire. We hiked the Hotshots Trail up to the overlook. Along the way are 19 memorial plaques commemorating each firefighter. We learned about their education, their families and got a glimpse into what made each young man tick. Most were known for their infectious smiles and compassion for others. It was encouraging to read that many of them put Christ first in their lives. We then continued our hike down the Memorial Trail to their location where they perished marked by 19 gabions (wire baskets filled with rocks) chained together symbolizing the unity of the guys. It was a moderately difficult 7.5 mile round trip hike on a very foggy day - it was a great outing but sobering to think about what occurred on that mountain in 2013. If you live near Yarnell, AZ this is worth the drive.
